Review Orlando Sentinel Buff Britney Spears delivers at Amway Arena “Circus”

It’s a good thing that the rains stopped because otherwise I would surely be struck by lightning for this:

I really liked a Britney Spears concert.

Elevated by the presence of the newly buff Britney, Tuesday’s “Circus” spectacle at Amway Arena was the best performance by the pop star I’ve ever seen. Structurally, of course, it was virtually a carbon copy of her Tampa show in March, down to the same ad libs and transitions.

This time, however, the svelte singer looked to be having a better time. It was easier to tell because there was a lot more Britney on the big video screens above the three rings below. In Tampa, there was nary a close-up all night long, lest anyone get a look at the pudgy Britney.

The video element was important because it gave the audience, especially in the upper bowl, a chance to see the singer’s facial expressions: an array of smiles, winks and nods that made things more personal. With Britney, of course, “Freakshow” isn’t just a song title, it’s a state of mind.

Under the “big top,” the circus mood was heightened by the inspired addition of the Big Apple Circus. That troupe of funky gymnasts was astounding in a 20-minute opening set that featured amazing leaps on balance beam, hip-swiveling hula-hoop fun and a trampoline act by a legless woman.

It was nice to see the circus theme used as more than an excuse to demonstrate sexual positions.

Not that there wasn’t plenty of that.

“I make it hot,” Spears proclaimed as she descended from the rafters to do the “Circus” opener. Accompanied by dozens of dancers, acrobats, magicians and jugglers, it was a visual feast.

The stage, which took up most of the arena floor was an attraction on its own. With an assortment of trap doors, descending curtains and other gadgets, it was a Swiss Army Knife of possibilities.

All of those diversions, along with a sound mix that was surprisingly hospitable, allowed the show to overshadow the music.

Not a bad idea.

Dance-friendly songs such as “Radar” and “Hot As Ice” are still utterly dopey. It also was exceedingly unlikely that the ringmaster was actually singing.

And despite her new physique, Britney hasn’t improved much as a dancer. Her moves in sexually charged songs such as “Boys” and “Do Somethin’. ” still look more like the midnight moves of a drunken sorority sister than choreography.

Again, it was the diversions to the rescue. There was Britney being sawed in half or riding around in a circus cage on wheels for the anti-paparazzi anthem “Piece of Me.” And what was the deal with the bicycles on “Boys”? Britney’s was equipped with a stripper pole, which can’t be standard issue.

There was but the briefest nod to her bubble-gum roots, with a remixed run through “.. .. . Baby. One More Time” near the finale. For that one, she wore horn-rimmed specs and clung to what looked like a chain-link fence. What was that? Librarians in prison?

Whatever.

Undoubtedly, I’ll endure abuse from my rocker friends for loving this show, but as guilty pleasures go, it’ll be worth it.

Besides, it’s good to see Britney back. It’d be sad to see her spiral downward in the tradition of Michael Jackson, Elvis and Marilyn.

If Tuesday is any indication, her second act is already under way. In the big top, the show must go on.

Britney Spears performs to a screaming packed house at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. (Special to DFW.com / Rachel Parker)

DALLAS — The textbook definition of a star certainly applies to the earthly Britney Spears, a literal embodiment of heat and light if ever there was one.

That description — blinding, scorching evanescence — could also apply to her first tour in five years, which stopped at the American Airlines Center Tuesday night. “The Circus Starring Britney Spears,” according to the (more…)

My ears were ringing before the show even started.

So many teens, pre-teens, post-teens — all wailing like banshees for Britney Spears at Washington’s Verizon Center last night.

Though piercingly painful, the crowd’s gleeful shrieks for Brit-Brit….

PLAYLIST has had a world exclusive listen to Britney Spears’ new album Circus.

I am the first journalist to hear the record, out on December 1, in full and I am thrilled to report the pop princess is on startling good form.

The 26-year-old explained the title, saying: “It’s me as an entertainer, and what I do, and what I bring to a show is basically like a circus.

“I bring costumes and fun theatrical things that make people just look in awe and everything tells a story on stage and makes people want to watch it more.”

Here is my track-by-track rundown. Watch out for Brit’s performance on The X Factor on November 29.

As literal as CD titles can be lately, it seems to be all about the packaging of a theme. From P!nk’s new CD “Funhouse” to Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad,” having a niche to bank your “look” on is all the better. With Brit Brit’s new music-box-big-top sound, I get the feeling that we’re not only getting a CD entitled “Circus” but we should soon expect a three-ringed infused concert tour (which she announced will be starting spring of 2009, of which Wade Robson will choreograph), tons of clown painted merchandise and maybe even a video of this girl-nominon tight-rope walking her way right into the bank.

So, since there is a major theme going on so I figured I’ll stick to it. So here is a rundown of the 13 core tracks on her new release and 2 bonus tracks included on the US Deluxe Edition. Along with what act I think they would accompany in a “Circus” and even a rating … three rings being the best, of course.

The people at Britney’s record label are treating her new album like the frickin’ Shroud of Turin — putting legitimate music critics through a virtual gauntlet just to get a peek.

Even though the album already has been leaked online, we’re told the rules of the review sessions for “Circus” have been insanely strict: No recorders, no computers, and only one person at a time hearing the album. We’re also told reviewers haven’t even been allowed to fast forward or rewind “Circus” themselves.

One person has told us the album was played for the critics at “crazy” loud volume levels.

We’re feeling a bit giddy and overwhelmed this afternoon because we’ve just come back from Britney HQ, where we’ve had an exclusive sneak preview of her new album, Circus (out 1 December). We can officially confirm that Britney’s back on form, which should mean we’re talking more about Brit’s music than her personal dramas from now on.

So, what’s the album like then? Well, highlights include title track The Circus (set to be the next single) which has an insanely catchy chorus and loads of cool electro-y bleeps and beeps; it’s vintage Britney, which means it’s totally amazing.

While Kill The Lights and the tongue-in-cheek If U Seek Amy (which is not, we’ve been assured, about the Winehouse) are both fab dance tracks that have a typical Britney attitude and edge to them. But it’s not all up-tempo dance floor-fillers,

Out From Under is a gorgeous ballad with poignant lyrics (which we reckon might be about K-Fed); best of all Britney’s vocals sound natural, making it one of her best ballads ever. So tell us, are you excited about hearing Britney’s new album?

LOL At This Quote From Pop Justice….
Alright then, due to ‘overwhelming public demand’ (ie a string of emails ranging from the polite to the downright offensive) here are some words about tracks from the Britney album.

‘CIRCUS’
This is the title track. This means the song’s called ‘Circus’, and it’s from the album ‘Circus’. “I run a tight ship,” Britney announces, “so beware – I’m like the ringleader, I call the shots, I’m like a firecracker I make it hot, now put a show”. What does this mean? Well, she is a ringleader on a ship – we presume this is something to do with a special circus on a cruise liner of some sort. Basically Britney is comparing herself to lots of things at the same time. Your English teacher will tell you this is a silly thing to do – but Britney is allowed to do it, because she is Britney. The track comes with massive thudding electronic R&B production and there’s a lot of stopping and starting, including a a built-in MTV-style dance breakdown segment. The chorus lyric is “all eyes on me in the centre of the ring just like a circus” but the best bit’s the bridge, with its “I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins, spotlight on me and I’m ready to break, I’m like a performer with this world as a stage” bit. There’s all sorts of other stuff about “don’t stand there watching me, following me, show me what you can do”. Bits of it are a lot like ‘Break The Ice’ from the last album, but with an extra layer of Big Production.

OUT FROM UNDER
‘Blackout’ didn’t have any big ballads so here is one for ‘Circus’. It’s incredibly similar to this version…

…of the song but with more guitar (weedy guitar, not big proper guitar). The production’s a lot less sparse and a great deal more ‘Britney ballad’ (in the ‘I’m Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman’ tradition). Basically the most interesting thing about Britney’s version that you can’t hear on the Joanna Pacitti original is the finale, which ends with a great “from under, from under, from under” bit.

KILL THE LIGHTS
Well this one has definitely leaked so we’re bollocksed if we’re going to spend time trying to describe it when we can just post this YouTube.

The fact that this has been on YouTube for two days already without Sony pulling it via a copyright claim suggests that Sony leaked the song themselves, but it might just be that everyone at Sony is busy doing something else, like watering the plants or eating Haribo.

IF U SEEK AMY
This is the one people are excited about because the words “if you seek Amy” sound like “F-U-C-K me”. After a “la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la” intro the song sort of throws itself into a ridiculous faux-lesbo ‘romp’ in which Britney looks for girl called Amy in a club (“oh baby baby have you seen Amy tonight, is she in the bathroom?”), can’t find her while the club’s closing, bangs on about “love me hate me, say what you want about me but all the boys and all the girls are ready to f-u-c-k me” and then goes bonkers over a lot over a thunderous Timbaland vs Scooter production job. There are some “ha ha he he ho ho ho” bits, a great whooshing noise into the final chorus and an overriding sense that this might be one of Britney’s most ridiculous recordings to date.

‘VERDICT’: It’s ‘Blackout 2.0′ – this is good news, ‘Blackout’ was a phenomenal album – but seems to include a lot of posturing and also seems to be quite gimmicky, which hopefully won’t extend across the entire album. The inclusion of a song like ‘Out From Under’ suggests that this album, as a whole, might be a bridge between ‘In The Zone’ and ‘Blackout’, or at least a bridge between ‘Blackout’ and a next album more along the ‘In The Zone’ lines. That didn’t make any sense at all, did it. Anyway if these are the very best songs on the album we’re probably heading for a 7/10 sort of affair but it’s hard to second guess a Britney album so what it will end up like is anybody’s guess.

Earlier today we were treated to a sneak preview of the new Britney album. Here’s what we found:

Circus is essentially a sequel to last year’s Blackout album – it has the same fierce electro sound, but Britney sounds more confident and there’s less reliance on the vocoder.

CIRCUS:

The title track is a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style thump. “I’m the ringleader, I call the shots, I’m a firecracker, I like it hot,” Britney sings on the verses. It’s been confirmed as the next single and the video’s already been shot.

OUT FROM UNDER:

Circus also has something Blackout didn’t – a proper, teary-eyed ballad. It’s called ‘Out From Under’ and it’s really quite lovely.

KILL THE LIGHTS: ( Which was recently leaked click here to listen! )

Britney’s introduced as “our very own pop princess, now Queen of Pop” on ‘Kill The Lights’. That’s her off Madonna’s Christmas card list then…

The song itself is almost as knowing as Blackout’s ‘Piece Of Me’, with Britney taking the paparazzi to task. “You don’t like me, I don’t like you,” she tells them. “Only difference is you still listen, I don’t have to.”

If U Seek Amy:

‘If U Seek Amy’, on which Britney actually reunites with Max Martin, is 50% glam, 50% rave. The title has nothing to do with a certain Miss Winehouse and makes more sense if you say it quickly… just don’t do so in polite company.

If U Seek Amy: “It’s a great track. A stomping robo pop number with clattering kettle drums and Brit being quite frank about the opinion she holds of herself.”
Kill The Lights: ‘”Kill The Lights” focuses on the star’s relationship with the paparazzi, the lights referring to flash bulbs. It’s a brilliant disco banger with an elastic bass line and plenty of spooky keyboard work. During Kill The Lights Brit addresses her camera-toting tormentors with the brilliant line: “Is that money in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?”

Circus: “The collection’s title track sees Brit morphing ever closer to MADONNA. Circus has more than a passing resemblance to the industrial hip-hop-powered tracks on Hard Candy.

Out From Under: “It’s a stirring break-up ballad up there with the best.”

BRITNEY SPEARS has never been a shrinking violet and her latest album Circus takes her bravado to startling new heights.

I’m the only journalist on the planet to have heard the pop princess’s latest offering — and one track in particular left me stunned.

The title If You Seek Amy, seems innocuous enough, but it has an entirely different meaning.

It goes: “All the boys and all the girls want to if you seek Amy”. That clearly doesn’t make much sense.

What you hear, though, is the quite shocking statement: “All the boys and all the girls want to f*** me.”

I can’t see LEONA LEWIS releasing anything like that in the future.

It’s a great track. A stomping robo pop number with clattering kettle drums and Brit being quite frank about the opinion she holds of herself.

Her marriage meltdown is tackled on Out From Under and Brit seems mighty relieved to be shot of KEVIN FEDERLINE.

She sings: “We tried everything we could try so let’s just say goodbye forever.”

It’s a stirring break-up ballad up there with the best.

Circus is out on the star’s 27th birthday on December 2.

Parental discretion is advised.
