Through it all, the tabloid frenzy, the bizarre behavior, messy divorce and custody battles, Amy Lawhead’s love for her favorite pop singer never waned.

In fact, it only grew stronger.

“I think she’s better. She has just reinvented herself. Despite the troubles in her life, she came back out on top, has gotten her life straight, gotten her kids straight and now she’s gotten her music straight,” Lawhead said. “I think she’s definitely come out better in the end.”

The ’she’ that Lawhead is referring to is none other than pop superstar Britney Spears, whose “Circus” tour comes to town at Saturday at the CenturyTel Center.

“The Circus Starring Britney Spears” will feature special guest Kristinia DeBarge.

The tour has been lauded as Spears’ comeback after a tumultuous period of years in which her private life overshadowed her music in the headlines.

During that time, the 27-year-old Kentwood native suffered a public mental breakdown and a heated, high-profile custody battle for her two sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.

However, her fans have remained true through it all.

Spears’ latest album, “Circus,” marked her fifth No. 1 debut on the Billboard album charts and earlier this year she kicked off her first tour in five years in New Orleans.

“I know she’s had troubles in her life, but her music is awesome and she’s just a great entertainer and puts on a great show,” Lawhead said.

Longtime fan Jonathan Langford, of Shreveport, said he always defended Spears during the controversy. “I had my questions sometimes and was like ‘Oh Lord,’ but I’ve always loved her,” he said. “I think she stays consistent, but the production is what’s gotten better.”

Candice Williams, of Shreveport, said she’s always felt a special connection to Spears.

“I’m still a fan because her songs are addictive and make you want to get up and dance! She is my age and was growing up the same time I was. All of her songs take me back to my high school days and some funny memory of my friends and me,” Williams said.
